Chairman’s Summing Up.

Thank you to all those members that were able to spare the time to go through this years online/digital AGM. Just to reiterate, after a couple of postponements the method finally undertaken catered for the best interests of all, especially those that continue to prefer to maintain isolation and distancing.

Whilst uptake and response wasn’t as high as expected we had sufficient feedback to warrant the proceedings as official and, as promised, here is a summary of the outcome.

Minutes of the AGM from 13 May 2019 were accepted as a full and accurate record of the proceedings of such and that these minutes were duly approved and adopted.

Profit and loss account for the year ending 31 January 2020 and balance sheet as of that date are approved and were duly adopted.

There were no Matters Arising raised.

All section reports were included in the AGM pack you would have received via email or had sight of the hard copies that were available at the Club prior to Lockdown #2 (these will continue to be available) so I won’t prolong this by going over what’s already been stated but just give here a general overview.

i) Bar

Takings although very marginally down showed a slightly higher profit over the previous year. Staffing had settled in to a regular and comfortable routine without any problems. Big thanks to Alan and his team.

ii) Entertainments

Income from the Hall hire was significantly up by 14% although usage was down  and we were able to return a profit of £406. A big turn-round on 2018 by over £5,000 as there was little in the way of investment for Club events.

iii) Estates & Facilities

The new kitchen was finished and is available for use. No other major projects were undertaken only general remedial work. Plans for 2020/21 were shared in the report.

iv) Sport (Tennis & Snooker)

Snooker continued to provide valuable income for the Club although overall takings were 5% down on 2018. There were no exceptional maintenance costs and the facility helps maintain an element of the membership and of course contributes to bar sales during (and after) use.

Tennis takings in 2019 were down c45% compared to 2018 in spite of the courts being brought up to scratch. We relied on the honesty of those using the facility to “pay and play’ but it would seem that this is not fully being adhered to. Tennis players do not have to be members of the Club and it’s also been found that most using the courts do not take advantage of Club facilities – in particular the bar (largely due to most tennis being played while the bar is closed so it seems)

Financial Reports

Overall the Club maintained a healthy financial position and was confident that the long-term prospects of the Club remained secure. The Club also had sufficient reserves to maintain and continue to improve the facilities.

There were no questions raised on Accounts to year end 31 January 2020.

Profit & Loss account for year ended 31 January 2020 and balance sheet as of that date are approved and adopted.

Appointment of Management Committee and Officers.

Chris Majewski is appointed to the role of Honorary Secretary.

Nigel Sime, as the retiring committee member and Honorary Secretary, is re-appointed to the management committee.

Mark McLennan is re-appointed to the management committee.

Tom Cox is re-appointed to the management committee.

Viv Gregory is re-appointed to the management committee.

Danny Housden is re-appointed to the management committee.

2020 has been such a strange year for us all so, although this is principally about the AGM and year ending 31 January 2019, I want to round-off by bringing everyone up to speed with where we are and how we’re coping with the current restrictions, etc.

Those of you who ventured into Club prior to Lockdown #2 will have noticed that we have covered all bases and legal requirements to keep the environment as safe and as hassle-free as possible so we can all still enjoy a drink with friends in the confines of the building and have also extended the outdoor seating area for those days when the weather allows. It’s our intention to make this facility a permanent fixture as, during the course of the finer days over the last few months, it has proved to be extremely popular.

We also set up the garden “Shack Bar” around the back of the Club by the bowling green, this was a “soft” launch a few months ago and so wasn’t greatly used. It will however be promoted in the early Spring of 2021 as it not only gives us opportunities for outdoor activities, BBQs, “garden parties” etc., but also provides a safe outdoor environment where sunny days can be fully enjoyed by all, including families with children, and also attract business from the bowls club and tennis players.

When we re-open again, hopefully on 3 December – watch out for further notifications – on the assumption no increased protocols are imposed, we will carry on as we were up till 4 October. Of course, members and guests safety will always be a priority, so if there are any changes in requirements we will of course be complying.

Sports continue to be regularly shown in the Club and for major events the big screen is set up in the Hall. It’s not just about football, so for those of you that are into your rugby, F1 or whatever, come along and enjoy the event over a few beers.

Looking slightly ahead, at the time of writing this I’m afraid we have not firmed any plans for Christmas events just yet with the exception of selling tickets for the customary Meat Raffle, which will now be a Meat AND Drink Raffle – how this and other events will take place still rather depends on directives, but watch out for emails and notices on the Club website for updates.

The Club is for the benefit of its members…and the community, it’s important that you continue to support the Club and the best way to do this is by popping up and having a drink or 3 as soon as we all can.

We look forward to seeing soon. In the meantime – Stay safe.
